Standing Water: do this first

1. Stop the water source: shut the fixture valve or the main.
2. Get standing water out fast with towels, a mop, or a wet-vac if it is safe to plug in.
3. Open doors and windows and run fans to start drying, if safe.
4. Photograph the water and the source before cleanup. Wet materials can start growing mold in 24 to 48 hours.

General first steps

1. Shut off the main water valve (often near the water heater, basement wall, or where the line enters).
2. Kill power to wet areas at the breaker - only if you can reach it without standing in water. If unsure, don't.
3. Move valuables, electronics, and documents out of the water.
4. Snap photos before you clean up.
5. Stay out of sagging ceilings and sewage water.
