Safety first

  1. If the ceiling is sagging or bulging, keep everyone out from under it. It can collapse.
  2. If water is near a light fixture or ceiling fan, turn that circuit off at the breaker if you can do it from a dry spot, and don't use the light.
  3. Never climb on a roof during rain, wind, or ice.

Contain the water

  1. Put buckets or bins under drips and protect the floor with towels or plastic.
  2. Move furniture and electronics away.
  3. A small, controlled puncture of a water bubble is sometimes advised by pros to drain it into a bucket, but only if the ceiling is not sagging badly and you stand to the side. If unsure, don't.

Find the source

  1. Bathroom or kitchen above? Shut that fixture's supply or the main valve.
  2. Leak only during rain? It's likely the roof, flashing, or gutters. Call once it's safe.
  3. Attic: if it's safe to enter, look for wet insulation or drips and place a container.

Document it

Photograph stains, drips, and damage before cleanup. Wet drywall and insulation can grow mold in a day or two, so get it dried out quickly.
